Linacre was founded in 1962 and is named after the influential Renaissance man, humanist, medical scientist and physician to King Henry VIII, Thomas Linacre (1460-1524), who also distinguished in Greek while studying at All Souls College. The college uses Linacre's achievements as inspiration for its own ideals and goals, thereby encouraging academic vigor. It has also become a leading exponent of green issues and provides a foundation for students studying environmental change. It is the first Oxford college to achieve certified fair trading status and Oxbridge's first carbon neutral college – an achievement which has not gone unnoticed by the Secretary of State for the Environment. All students are expected to do their part and recycle as much as possible. Graduate onlyLinacre is Oxford's sixth youngest college and only accepts postgraduate students, of which there are approximately 300. These students are actively encouraged to present their research to colleagues for discussion and exchange. The college is committed to an equal opportunities policy and has a number of generous scholarships to help students in need. It was one of Oxford's first coeducational colleges and considers itself thoroughly modern with a reputation for food and popular festivals. Fellows, students and staff are not separated, they all use a single common room and dine together in a room without a high table. There is a diverse international mix of students from over fifty countries. Although it is proudly modern, Linacre realized that there were certain Oxford traditions worth respecting and offers a formal room once a week, where dresses must be worn. The common room offers the little treats students need to function properly - tea.... .. middle of paper ......y-four hours a day to accommodate the needs of night-timers and those who leave their essays at the last minute.Student portersStudents are offered two ways to earn money to reduce their battles (college financial account), either they work in the student-run bar or they work a shift of three hours as a student porter, which involves providing reception services and handling fire alarms. The college is one of the few not affiliated with Oxford. Student Union. Some religious institutions do not join for moral reasons; the union is seen as promoting contraception; Linacre's objections are entirely financial, believing that high tuition brings little benefit. Linacre has a passionate student body who celebrate the delightful differences it presents from the more historic colleges which have repressive hierarchical structures and fierce bowler hat wearing porters..
