For example, assigning the label “insane” to a person can represent an important step in the process of becoming mentally ill. Labeling theory has also been used to explain witchcraft. Nevertheless, the theory as a whole has brought beneficial development to the sociological understanding of self-conceptions, the relationships between deviance, social reaction and social control. Furthermore, after careful analysis, it is evident that labeling theory has proven to be very important in establishing a relative body of empirical evidence on the study of crime and criminality.
