“Sailing in the Bahamas is a dream come true, isn’t it?” » (Stevenson 1). Unfortunately, for Rachel, the protagonist of Robin Stevenson's novel A Thousand Shades of Blue, the reality is very different. She finds herself stuck on a boat with her dysfunctional family, as she struggles to live a life free from her parents' war. When she discovers something that threatens to tear her family apart, what follows puts a stamp on an already vivid image of her character. Rachel, throughout Stevenson's A Thousand Shades of Blue, displays characteristics of carelessness, dishonesty, and compassion. Rachel's recklessness is made evident in the novel. An example of his reckless behavior can be seen through his attitude. For example, the inappropriate use of foul language when addressing her parents clearly defines her indiscipline. She further shows this characteristic by constantly disobeying her parents and sneaking out at night to meet friends. On top of that, while she is running away, although Rachel is only sixteen, she illegally drinks alcoholic beverages and smokes....
