The image of women was not only controlled but also manipulated by men through art and written text. Because women were not allowed to write or do things in the arts like sculpture, one could interpret this as women having no real function in society other than to reproduce. This does not help people trying to study the past, such as historians, because the only history written about women, their roles and their daily lives has been written by men. Scholars are unable to see the perspective, thoughts, and manner in which ancient Greek women were actually treated. Sculptures of women like the female figure “Tanagra” can only be interpreted in the way the male artist wants everyone to interpret a woman's body. Women were subject to how men wanted their bodies to look. The "Tanagra" figure provides insight into how the woman in sculpture is highly idealized in relation to a man's expectations of what a woman should look like from that era. She has broad shoulders giving other men the idea that she is strong, but in a sensual way as the himation falls from her shoulders to show her skin. The head of the character “Tanagra” is raised and speaks in a submissive manner. It was like social propaganda, women of that time saw the juxtaposition between man and woman in sculptures or
