This can take place on cell phones, computers and tablets. This can happen on chat, instant messaging, email, SMS, or websites. Cyberbullying is using technology to harass, threaten, embarrass or target another person. A cyberbully can intimidate someone using the Internet by writing hurtful things through instant messaging, text messages or online games, posting derogatory messages on social networking sites, posting and sharing photos or videos embarrassing and creating a fake profile in order to humiliate a person. Slang used for cyberbullying is flamboyant, trolling, and happy slapping. Flaming means people on the Internet are hostile or offensive to each other. Trolling is when someone tries to start fights or likes to bother people on the internet. A happy slap is when someone assaults a person and then posts a video of it to amuse others. Other ways that students can be victims of cyberbullying are through identity theft to impersonate people, photo shopping, and physical threats. Signs that a student might be being bullied via the Internet include: avoiding technology, withdrawing, avoiding conversations about technology, having low self-esteem, being depressed, afraid, or having declining grades. Poor eating and sleeping habits are also signs. Teach students effective cooperation skills to deal with cyberbullies by asking them not to respond to bullying, not to respond to rude emails, messages or comments. Block it
