Essay / Body type and obesity: what factors cause obesity?
Throughout history, different body types were desired in different civilizations around the world and in different periods. The first sculptural representation of the human body, 20,000 to 35,000 years ago, depicts an obese woman. During the Renaissance, some members of the upper class began to flaunt their large size, being seen as beautiful and healthy, something average women could not get in return. It was one of the ideal body shapes sought by many societies, as evidenced in art, painting, and sculptures of overweight women; it symbolizes wealth, upper class and health as they have enough to eat compared to others who were struggling with starvation. Despite society's portrayal of a healthy person, is obesity really something that could be ignored? Nowadays, there is enough food to feed everyone in most places in the world, perhaps too many foods containing high amounts of fat since the beginning of the fast food industry; servings are more than one serving. The substance problem in foods and lack of physical activity is causing an increase in obesity, which leads to more health problems in America. Compared to other countries, obesity is more problematic in the United States and also has one of the highest obesity rates along with Mexico. . In 1990, only 20-30% of Americans were classified as obese, by 2000 this rate increased to 30%, by 2009 it exceeded 30-40% of the population. (e.g. Figure 1) This actually raises the question of "what factor is causing this situation" that makes America this way and what impact it has on the world; the consequences of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer. In Fast Food Nation, "In the United States, people have become increasingly sedentary: they drive to work instead of walking,...... middle of paper...... people in America. Diet also plays an important role, it can help prevent disease and stop the spread of obesity. Works cited “Effects of obesity on health”. - Stanford Hospital and Clinics. Np, and Web.
