Decision Support Systems in Organizational Decision MakingDecision making refers to the process of searching and selecting options based on priorities and the values of the person making the decision. Since many choices are involved, it is important to identify as many options as possible in order to choose the one that best aligns with a company's purpose, goals, values, and vision. Due to the critical role of decision-making in business growth and financial advancement, many companies such as Amazon.com and EBay are investing heavily in business intelligence systems, consisting of certain technology tools and technology applications created to with the aim of facilitating the improvement of the decision-making process in companies. In this article, I take a critical look at decision support systems and how they affect organizational decision making. Advantages of decision support systems Decision support systems (DSS) help with time management. All DSS groups improve the reduced time circle involved in the decision-making process. At Amazon.com, DSS improves employee productivity and facilitates the timely acquisition of information needed for the decision-making process. DSS facilitates better interpersonal communication between those responsible for decision making. Communication-oriented decision support systems and group decision support systems lead to a smoother communication process and information sharing. Additionally, model-based decision support systems provide a platform to share certain facts and assumptions regarding the decision-making process. At Amazon.com, DSS are used to emphasize change, speed of response, and flexibility in decision making.
