Why do directors choose to stay true to or deviate from a text when producing a film? Many directors choose to change or retain literary elements such as the characters, plot, and resolution of a text. The presence or absence of these specifics affects the audience. For example, in the story "The Monkey's Paw", a classic short horror story written by WW Jacobs, and the accompanying film, the similarities and differences in the characters, plot and resolution have an effect on readers and viewers. in the short story “The Monkey’s Paw” are different from those in the film. For example, in the text, a veteran named Sergeant Major Morris presents the monkey's paw to the White family. On the other hand, in the video, it is a gypsy woman who takes out the talisman instead. This difference in character affects the mood, which is clearly shown in the film when the gypsy is introduced. She is portrayed as being crazy, as shown by the derision of the other members invited to the party. Few people are ready to believe in the magic of the monkey's paw or the lady's categorical warnings. However, when Mr. White's wishes come true, the horror and credibility of the "loco" woman's admonitions become undeniable. This creates an even scarier atmosphere than in the story; in the text, the sergeant-major's warnings are much less elaborate than those of the gypsy: "'Hold it in your right hand and make a wish out loud,' said the sergeant-major, 'but I warn you of the consequences '” (Elements of Literature 90). He does not go into the details of “death” and “misfortune” as the gypsy does. The director may have intended to deviate from the text in this way. He or she may have chosen to change...... middle of paper ...... the same theme as in the story. Therefore, the director of the film "The Monkey's Paw" may have chosen to stay true to the resolution of the text to ensure that the audience receives the same message. In short, there are multiple similarities and differences in the characters, plot, and resolution of the short story and film “The Monkey's Paw” that clearly influence the audience. For example, the difference between characters affects the mood. Similarities in plot influence tone, and corresponding resolutions impact theme. The director of the film "The Monkey's Paw" chose to stick to certain aspects of the text and modify some for many reasons, including to keep the audience's attention, maintain the author's tone in the text and ensure that the readers and viewers receive the same message.
