  • Essay / The Negative Effects of Imperialism in Africa - 637

Imperialism is a policy aimed at expanding the power and influence of a country through diplomacy or military force. In the 20th century, many European countries attempted to colonize the great African continent. Europeans saw Africa as a region from which they could benefit, as it had an exceptional climate, a good size, and phenomenal natural resources. As Europeans divided the African continent, they failed to understand the possible negative effects on themselves and the indigenous people of Africa. Their foresight was limited to positive results. After Europeans began colonizing Africa, they achieved excellent results quite quickly. European influence had brought about the opening of many logging, mining, and plantation companies, as well as many other means of wealth. Document 4 shows this when it says: "...who were largely responsible for opening the region to loggers, miners, planters and other means of wealth. » By having colonies on the prosperous continent of Africa, countries would have a formidable source of income. By having a colony in Africa, Europeans would have easy access to cheap labor and participate in the slave trade. Document 1 shows this when it says: “These properties are worked by natives under their management. Foreigners are taking away the country's wealth. All the hard work is done by the enslaved natives. This would transform an already exceptional profit into an even better profit. The conquest of Africa had many positive effects for Europeans. However, some would argue that the negative effects outweigh the positives. The drive to conquer Africa often led to violent conflicts, which led to numerous battles and wars, resulting in the loss of much money and men. Document 7 shows this when he...in the middle of the document......gave indigenous peoples security of their person and land. This is shown in Document 4, when it states: "For all its faults, the colonial government provided security for people and property on the lands..." This transformed what was once an uncivilized place, in a place in which there were many rules to help the citizens. Europeans also opened many new industries on the continent. This provided many jobs for the natives. We can understand this when Document 4 states: "...who were largely responsible for opening the region to loggers, miners, planters and other means of wealth." » As you can see, The Scramble For Africa had many effects. Both positive and negative for Europeans and indigenous peoples of Africa. Such as death, slavery, rape, feeling embarrassed, losing money, creating jobs and creating successful industries..
