  • Essay / Symbolism in Yellow Wallpaper, by Charlotte Perkins...

YellowSymbolism can be a key element of a story. Symbolism is a sense of history using symbols to represent it. It is “the practice of representing things by symbols, or of investing things with a symbolic meaning or character” (Symbolism). This is a hidden message that the author puts in his story and can have several meanings depending on how the reader perceives it. Everyone understands what they read differently, which gives it different meanings. Usually all meanings are relatively similar. Stories may, however, contain more than one symbol. In a story we read in class, The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, there are two things that are symbols. The yellow color and the wallpaper are the symbols of this story. To write about both, you would have to write two separate articles. I will focus on the color yellow to help explain and show the symbolism. The color yellow has several meanings. One meaning is how yellow can refer to age as in the color white and how it becomes yellowish as it sees more years. Charlotte described yellow in a way that suggested she hated it. “The color is repulsive, almost revolting: an impure, smoldering yellow, strangely discolored by the slowly turning sunlight” (Madden 722). That said, it could refer to the way people age. The reason why this could be because when you read faded you think it happened over time and when you read faded by the slowly rotating sunlight it backs up the word faded and makes it sound au over time it slowly faded until this. Time can pass with ages, which means yellow could speak of aging. Most people think that as we get older, we become less and less attractive. Some people may seem revolting or you want to stay away because they seem awkward... middle of paper ... is that what it means. I came to the conclusion that there were too many ideas to list them all. The ones I listed were just the ones I could think of, but after comparing my research I found that these were just a few of the many meanings people came up with. This shows that a symbol represents a meaning, it can have meaning for many. Symbolism is either a meaning or a character in a story. The characters are easy to understand and emphasize, but this is where it can get difficult. Like the book The Yellow Wallpaper, it can be difficult to find the true meaning. Not all symbols will have a clear meaning. Most will have it when multiple meanings can be applied to that symbol. However, the meanings generally all fall under one general topic. Like in this story, I believe the meanings of the color yellow can all fall under the general theme of emotion in life..
