In the film, the Matrix artificial intelligence is used to create a virtual reality on humans. The characters in the film have no idea that everything around them is fake. Their sensations are artificially created and are not real experiences. In The Matrix, the main protagonist Neo learns that his entire human existence is conjured up by a malevolent machine, much like Descartes' evil demon. Another parallel in this film is that when Neo faces the truth he tries to reject it, as in The Meditations of Descartes he exposes how it is a human tendency to believe in vagueness simply because we are at comfortable with the idea. Another excellent example of Descartes' philosophy in the Meditations is The Brain in a Vat Argument presented by Hilary Putnam. The Brain in a Vat experience is a situation in which you must imagine yourself connected to a futuristic computer that simulates your senses to discover a world.
