Essay / Atlantis, the lost city - 1165
About 11,000 years ago, somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean, there was an island called Atlantis. In Atlantis resided a race of people with great technology far more advanced than all others (“Lost Civilizations: The Story of Atlantis”). According to Greek mythology, Atlantis was home to the Greek god Poseidon. Poseidon fell in love with a mortal woman and built her a house in the middle of the island and surrounded it with water and earth to protect her ("Lost Civilization: The Story of Atlantis"). Near the middle of the island, a temple was built in honor of Poseidon; the temple contained a large golden statue of Poseidon riding a chariot with winged horses. Atlantis became wealthy thanks to its bountiful crops and exotic herbs and spices. After a while, the people of Atlantis began to become greedy and power-hungry, to punish the Atlanteans, Zeus and the other gods forced the sea to swallow up the great city ("Lost Civilization: The Story of the 'Atlantis'). Is the city of Atlantis just part of Greek history or was it actually a large and prosperous city? The only known writing about the lost city comes from a Greek philosopher named Plato. There is much controversy over the credibility of his story. Plato was born around 428 BC in Athens (“Plato – Biography”). He was in the Athenian army until after the Peloponnesian War. After his military service, he set out to join the oligarchy. Soon he tires of politics, becomes a writer and travels the world to study ("Plato - Biography"). Plato became a very famous writer. He then returned to Athens and founded a school called the Academy. He was a mentor to many great Greek leaders, including Aristotle and Dionysus II, the ruler of Syracuse. He said...... middle of paper...... that he would be found one day. With all the evidence supporting both sides of the argument, the reader can decide whether Atlantis actually existed.
