  • Essay / True Courage In To Kill A Mockingbird By Harper Lee

Boo is an isolated and shy man who never leaves his house. There are only rumors that Boo goes out when it's pitch black outside. In addition to these rumors, he is still locked in his house, “with the shutters and doors closed” (9). It's not until one day, while Jem and Scout are walking down the road on their way back from a Halloween event at school, that Boo Radley comes out of his house. The children were walking home in silence when they suddenly heard the sound of someone's shoes. Shortly after, Bob Ewell runs straight towards the children, knife in hand. As the children are tackled, we hear a “crunch” (262) from Jem’s arm, and he ends up on the cold, wet ground. Scout is so tangled it's hard to see. What she manages to see is a man taking Jem home. This man's name is Boo Radley. When Bob Ewell fights against the kids, Boo must decide whether or not he wants to reveal himself. In the end, Boo ends up fighting Bob Ewell and saving the children's lives. Even though Boo is still locked away from the rest of society and doesn't want to be seen, he overcomes his fear and fights for the children's safety. He truly shows courage as he stands up for what is right and leaves his home to save Atticus' life.
