Essay / Distinctive voice in Anne Hathaway by Carol Ann Duffy...
Carol Ann Duffy's poem "Anne Hathaway" is about Anne Hathaway's love and greatness of Shakespeare. While Robert Browning's poem "The Laboratory" is about a woman who poisons the woman her lover sleeps with. In the opening lines of “Anne Hathaway,” the voice sounds dreamy and passionate. Whereas in “The Laboratory” the voice sounds mean, lively and excited. “The bed we loved in was a spinning world of forests, castles, torches, cliff tops, seas where we could dive for pearls.” Using the world “loved” instead of “slept” creates connotations of passion, love, and as if their love is above that of others. Also, when she writes "world spinning" it gives connotations of excitement and as if their relationship is a whirlwind but fun word. Finally, the list of places listed not only creates a sense of adventure but they are all places used in Shakespeare's plays, suggesting that she was truly interested in him and what he did. "Now that I fasten this glass mask carefully, may you look through these faint white curling smokes, while you ply your trade in this devil's forge. What is the poison to poison him, I will tell you pray? Unlike "Anne Hathaway", the opening lines of "The Laboratory" create an evil, lively and excited voice when he writes: "What is the poison to poison her, pray?" thinking that this would be said at a fast pace because of the three Ps. Also, it sounds a bit like singing which creates excitement Finally, because she is asking the chemist questions, it suggests that. she is greedy and interested in poison, unlike "Anne Hathaway" where she is only interested in where Shakespeare is and what he is doing. In "Anne Hathaway", the chemist's voice gives the poem. the impression that Anne Hathaway was deeply in love...... middle of paper ......f violence to portray the murderer as violent and crazy. When he writes “Mark, burn and bite”. This makes you think she would say it in an angry, shouty tone and emphasize the B's. Plus, I think she would say it in a demanding tone and if that didn't happen she could become violent and angry. Very different from the loving and gentle voice of "Anne Hathaway". Overall I think in "Anne Hathaway" the voice sounds more real and more down to earth because in "Anne Hathaway" she talks about the good side of love unlike in "Anne Hathaway". The Laboratory' where they just talk about the evil side. I think the most effective technique would be assonance because the sounds made can compare to certain things and give people those characteristics. In "Anne Hathaway", I think the message was: it doesn't matter how expensive or valuable things are, what matters is the memories you have with them..
