Essay / A Discussion of the Plan of Dante's Inferno - 574
Dante's Inferno is about a man who goes through and describes hell in great detail. It describes the many different levels and the levels within the levels. It tells the story of who and why someone would go there, at each level. Each crime or sin has a different punishment which depends on the severity of the sin committed by the person. Some punishments are more intriguing than others, depending on who reads them. Some of these more interesting or allegorical punishments are intended for prodigals, suicides, and seducers. The first interesting punishment in Dante's Inferno is that of the prodigals. Prodigals were people who were greedy for money and other things, and who spent freely without worrying about anything. Their punishment for this was that they had to bang large rocks together for eternity. There are also other people in this circle of hell who are called misers. “They are divided into two groups: those who have amassed their goods and those who have spent them without counting” (Hudson) With the exception of the Vestibule and Limbo, the upper hell is reserved for sins of incontinence like the sins which come from unbalanced actions. “There are few demons here, although Minos assigns sinners their place in hell when they come to the Vestibule. Most of these sins did not harm anyone other than the sinner himself. » (Wilkie) This punishment is interesting because of its connection to the crime with which it is associated. Because people were so greedy and so eager to get rid of the money they had and spend it, they have to spend eternity sitting there patiently, with stones they can't get rid of. The second allegorical punishment of Dante's Hell is that of those who committed suicide...... middle of paper ......n with eyelashes for eternity. Each circle has rings, and each ring in the different circles has different meanings and different levels of punishment and allegorical meanings. Works CitedCardi, John, ed. Dante. Np, and Web.
