    The modern period began in the early 20th century. The writing quickly moved from the Romantic to the Victorian and adapted a new style known as modernism. Modernists were not concerned with writing about nature or history, unlike Romantic writers, but modernists were more concerned with exploration and independence of the self. Literature, in modern times, has developed a sense of alienation and focused on the recognition of the individual and his consciousness. Modern writing showed the deterioration and alienation of the individual rather than prosperity and development. The modern period was an intuitive response to the Victorian era. Meanwhile, Britain was plunged into war; Although the war was not fought on British soil, the men enlisted in the royal army, leaving the women, children and elderly behind. The remaining citizens were known as the Home Front. The war affected the home front by decreasing living standards, promoting women's rights, and strengthening unions and the workforce (BBC News.
