  • Essay / Death: Comparing Hamlet to My Own Personal Experience

    As we live our lives, we don't really take the time to stop and take note of the little things that are happening around us. We don't wonder why the sky is blue or why the sun rises. These are questions that we can easily research and find the answer to. What challenges the mind the most, in my opinion, is the complete uncertainty. When there is no definitive answer, you need to create your own picture of what you think it will be. The haunting question of “How can I accept the idea that one day my life will end” will definitely take you in a million different directions. Hamlet found himself facing death when he declared in his monologue: “To die, to sleep. to sleep, perhaps to dream - yes, that is the problem, For in this sleep of death what dreams can come” (Act 3, scene 1). It is his way of accepting that death is certain and inevitable. I can honestly say that I am still in a mind-numbing process of coming to terms with the problem myself.
