Essay / The Future of Our Precious Environment - 1754
The Future of Our Precious Environment The most effective way to preserve the environment is a controversial and enduring debate. Some believe that the only way to save the environment is to treat it as sacred and leave it intact, which ties in with John Muir's idea of preservation. Others understand that it is impossible to draw a line between civilization and environment, but that there can be a balance between the two. This is what Gifford Pinchot affirmed through his idea of conservation, which he defines as “the judicious management of natural resources” (Hott & Garey). In the contemporary United States, the dispute between the two approaches manifests itself in the way environmental problems are recognized; such as climate change, deforestation and heavy pollution. Although those who share John Muir's idea of preservation believe that this is the most effective way, it is clear that those who see that civilization and environment coincide will agree with Gifford Pinchot's idea of conservation. The best policy for preserving the environment is to acquire, as Edward O. Wilson explains in The Solution, an “environmental ethic” that will lead people to feel responsible for their fragile environment and to replenish what we get from it. (510). This will prevail in contemporary American society, because a balance between civilization and environment will ensure the sustainability of modern, developed countries that harm the environment the most. This will help meet the needs of underdeveloped countries trying to survive. This will enable a sustainable future for our precious environment. Everyone has their own perspective on how best to save the environment, so there is no clear cut answer on how to protect it. In...... middle of paper...... the countries that have suffered the most from devastating environmental changes. The best way to conserve nature has no clear solution. Some will say that leaving it intact is the only way for it to survive. Others say that by learning to use the environment responsibly, the benefits that accrue will enable the advancement of civilization. Policy that allows for a balance between nature and society acquires an “environmental ethic” that makes people feel responsible for their environment and, in return, replenish what is used of it. This policy will succeed because it is the best way, especially in the little time we have left to act before it is too late, for the developed countries to be viable, to help the underdeveloped countries to survive and, above all, so that the environment continues to live. and prosper for the future to come.
