  • Essay / Cultural Assimilation in Hunger Of...

Memory HungerSo much has been said about cultural assimilation, and so many people have struggled to live the new society, prove themselves, and work hard to absorb the new life learn the language and a new culture. So many people have dedicated their lives to assimilating and becoming part of American society. Cultural assimilation not only means surviving in a new life, but also people trying to integrate into the new society. A society where people are not judged by their class, money or education, but are determined by their race, color, religion and origin. Do we truly and deeply feel what it means to be part of a new society? Do we continue to follow the stereotypes we have created in our own minds that if we speak the same language with exactly the same dialect and share common interests in the new culture, we lose our own cultural roots or origins ? In short, what does cultural assimilation mean? One of the bright examples from personal experience reveals a special point of view on the remarkable work of Richard Rodríguez “Hunger for Memory”. Rodriguez shows cultural assimilation in his personal examples and completely exposes the problem by talking about himself as a Mexican-American who tried to survive a new way of life to become something of his own. In this book, Rodriguez attempts to idealize not only his way of life as he assimilates, but he also includes his feelings of being estranged from his own culture, his past, society, and his family. He believes that his existence in American society has made him understand what it means to be a Mexican American and what it means to be a minority... middle of paper ... the main moral of this culture. , because they choose to succeed and are only interested in the result. Second, the true understanding of “cultural assimilation” is what Rodriguez truly believes about the effort and sacrifice that the minority tries to make and leads to blending in or assimilating with the surrounding culture. There is no doubt that when you embrace a culture as part of ours, we become part of it. Add to the previous line that people need to start understanding that being assimilated must have dignity and forget the inequalities and differences between people, which include skin color, religion, race and nationality. It is for this reason that we must be conscious when teaching our children the value of our culture and equality between people. Also, now more than before, I'm not afraid to say where I'm from or what my religion is..
