The behavioral therapist may work with a client to identify therapeutic goals through several means. Identifying treatment goals is one of his top priorities, because only then can he truly get to work helping his client. He has his goal in mind: to follow a systematic process to help his client to the best of his ability. The behavior therapist believes that behavioral therapy models have been tried and tested. He understands that he focuses on his client's current problems, specific goals, and treatment plan. When the behavior therapist works on his functional assessment or behavior analysis, he strives to systematically discover all the parts and elements of a problem. First, he works with his client to identify the antecedent, or whatever is going on down to the behavior(s). Then, he listens and helps the client identify the behavior(s) as clearly as possible. Finally, he and the client think about the consequences or events that follow the behavior. This series may repeat several times as the therapist and client flesh out the details, including all elements, people, and environments involved. The behavioral therapist is very attentive and uses active listening when with his client. He is not as concerned with the history of behavior as he is with what is happening now. He monitors his client for nonverbal cues, inflections of voice or tone, mannerisms, and any other nuances that might be helpful in identifying all aspects of the problem. The behavioral therapist uses many interview techniques such as summarizing, reflecting, clarifying, and open-ended questioning.
