Empirical*does post-conflict transformation only happen in the country of origin or can it also happen to diaspora communities??AcehConflict contextAceh is located in the northern tip of the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. Its population is estimated at around 4 million and the vast majority of the population is Muslim. Aceh province has many ethnic groups; among them, the four main ones are the Acehnese, who represent 90% of the population, the Gayonese, Alas and Tamiang (McCulloch 2005). The territorial status of Aceh constitutes the main incompatibility between the Indonesian government and the GAM that led to the outbreak of armed conflict in 1976 (UCDP 2013). That year, Hasan di Tiro established the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) and declared the region's independence from the State of Indonesia (ASNLF Declaration of Independence 1976). GAM is driven by an ideology of national liberation and its main objective is to liberate Aceh “from all political control of the foreign regime in Jakarta and the foreign people of the island of Java” (Ibid.)1. The conflict is divided into three periods. The first began with the formation and declaration of independence of the GAM. Due to the weakness of the insurgency and the appeal of only a few supporters, mainly "idealistic intellectuals", the GAM was defeated by the Indonesian government through military repression and the economic programs it employed. Thus, at the end of this first rebellion, many GAM supporters were imprisoned or executed and the leaders were forced into exile (Schulze 2004; UCDP 2013). Renewed conflict began in the late 1980s. To deal with GAM's reinvention, Indonesian security forces launched "harsh counterinsurgency operations" characterized by repression...... middle of paper ......rest, detention, torture, deaths in custody, disappearances and extrajudicial executions. . As Minister of Security and Political Affairs in the governments that approved martial law and the "state of emergency" law in 2003 and 2004 respectively, KRAMD insists that this person "must be held fully accountable for the systematic war crimes committed by its security forces after the tsunami and during the peace process” (Free Aceh Democratic Preparatory Committee 2006b, press release, March 6). The peace agreement between the Indonesian government and GAM resolved the conflict in Aceh. The region has entered a new period, that of the post-conflict transformation process. However, this period of conflict transformation not only affects Acehnese living in Aceh, but it also has a transformative impact on Acehnese diaspora groups..
