Hurricane Katrina will always be remembered for the devastation it caused, my close friends, the Adams family knows that better than anyone. My family has been close friends with the Adamses for most of my life; being from Louisiana, they were incredibly passionate about helping others. Several members of the Adams family live in Louisiana, including their paternal relatives. The parents live just twenty minutes south of New Orleans on a small farm. During Hurricane Katrina, when the levees were breached, water flooded the town and their farm. They lost what few livestock they had and their home was damaged beyond repair due to high floodwaters. The couple sought shelter on their roof while waiting for help to arrive. Meanwhile, the Adams family had no way to contact them to make sure they were safe and they worried for almost a week. Finally, almost a week passed before the parents could contact our friends the Adam's. After the parents were rescued from the roof of their flooded home, they were taken to the Superdome which housed thousands of other helpless victims, who were unable to evacuate. The only reason the parents chose not to evacuate the town like most other residents was that they had both survived Hurricane Camille in 1969 and Hurricane Andrew in 1992 with minor damage. In addition, the parents could not bear to abandon their livestock, which was their main source of income. After staying at the Superdome for what seemed like forever, they were able to leave and move to Georgia to live temporarily with the Adams family. After that, they returned to Louisiana.
