  • Essay / Concert Report: Beethoven Guitar Project Concert

Beethoven Guitar Project Concert ReportOn Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at 12 p.m., UCI guitar students performed Beethoven's music in different periods of arrangements for two guitars and guitar and mandolin at the Claire Trevor Amphitheater. The performance was called Beethoven Guitar Project and included a program of Beethoven's Rondo arranged for two guitars by Ivan Klinger, a Beethoven Sonatina for mandolin and piano arranged for guitar, a Fanasie based on Beethoven lyrics arranged for two guitars by Ferdinando Carulli, variations for Beethoven. Septet arranged for two guitars by Vinc. Schuster, and finally variations of the Beethoven Quartet arranged for two guitars by Vinc. Schuster. The outside atmosphere was relaxed and simple as the audience really liked how the tempo of each song varied and wasn't just a constant beat. I appreciated how Beethoven's classical music can still be brought to life in the 21st century through modulation of instrumentation. I felt that time seemed to speed up during the performance, because before I knew it the concert was over, so one could perhaps say that one was engaged in critical listening to the music and without focusing on when it would end. Speaking of listening, one can listen critically using at least three elements: reception/audience, time and place, and emotional response. Recall that the audience had a widely distributed age range, from undergraduates to seniors. Finally, the emotional response I felt was that it made me recognize that music originally composed for a particular instrument can be transformed to fit the tonality of a different instrument. I find it very creative and intriguing. Overall, I recommend this concert to my peers where UCI performers play variations of Beethoven's musical pieces using stringed instruments and do so in a lively manner. There was no point during the performance where I felt bored or bothered by the fact that all five pieces had an engaging ambiance that made the time pass much faster than
