Essay / Injustice in Australia Essay - 759
Across the world, throughout history and today, injustice has affected us all. Whether racial, sexist, discriminatory, disadvantaged or worse, injustice surrounds us. Australia has been a country plagued by injustice since the day our British ancestors first set foot on Australian soil and claimed this land as their own. We killed many indigenous people and also took indigenous children from their families; This is called the Stolen Generation. On the day Australia became a federation in 1901, Australia's first Prime Minister, Edmund Barton, created the White Australia Policy. This allowed only white-skinned people to migrate to the country. Even though Australia was the first country to allow women to vote, women didn't stand for Parliament until 1943 because many of us didn't support female candidates. This was 40 years after a law was passed in the Australian Parliament allowing women to run for office. . After the events of World War II, we made an effort to put an end to these problems here in Australia. As Australians, we are completely unaware of all the suffering, heartache and sadness we have inflicted on Indigenous people since we set foot. on their land. We killed them in cold blood because we had several disagreements with the indigenous people. Evidence even shows that all the Tasmanian Aboriginal people were killed and completely disappeared. We gave them diseases they never had and wiped out the majority of their people and even took native children from their own biological parents. The idea behind this was that they would then breed with other Australians, which would get rid of all their tribal blood, making them extinct. The... middle of paper ...... during these several events in our nation's history have demoralized our reputation among other countries around the world. To make ourselves known as a better country to other nations, we completely abolished the White Australia Policy, returned Aboriginal people their freedoms and we were also the first country in the world to grant rights to women. Australia is now one of the most multicultural societies on the planet and we steadfastly live by our values of camaraderie, acceptance and freedom. Throughout our rich history, we have overcome these problems by bringing great change to our country by promoting multiculturalism and giving everyone a fair chance, which means giving everyone the chance to live a healthy and prosperous life. But despite these changes, Australia was once plagued by injustice. Australia now has a good reputation, but our horrible past will never be forgotten.
