Essay / Odysseus: the selfish hero of Homer's Odyssey
However, it is a selfish decision to hide any information about this journey from them. For they are his loyal ship crews who wish to return to their homeland, Ithaca. He hides the truth from his men and puts them in danger to save his journey to his homeland. Being selfish is not a quality a modern hero would have. His men are used to row his ship and escape this dangerous landscape. The consequences of not communicating with her crew ship were “…Scylla snatches six men from our hollow ship…” (XII 266). It was a choice that cost him even more lives and caused him more suffering. His selfishness led him to ignore the real danger. A modern hero would have been concerned about safety and made a plan to save as many men as possible. He doesn't try to save his men because that would ruin his chances of survival and put the surviving men in an even more difficult situation..
