  • Essay / Hell and Heaven in The Divine Comedy by Leonardo da Vinci

Human nature has evolved over time in terms of intellect and emotions. The Divine Comedy was the first literary work to provide a descriptive image of hell and heaven. Over time, people's perception of beauty has changed dramatically. Body shapes have become smaller and society has become more concerned with one's physical appearance. As a result, this obsession with beauty has led to fad diets, extreme exercise, and even plastic surgery. Those with tall stature crave physical attention and sometimes demean others who they believe are not worth looking at their beauty. Modern vanity has evolved into individuals taking photos of themselves, the term selfies, and posting them on social media for the sake of attention and recognition. The evil of vanity is that people neglect the joy of life and focus on self-improvement. People let their vanity cloud their judgment and fail to understand that their vanity is short-lived, because wealth and beauty can only last so long. Deep in hell, where the air is stiff like that of those with Botoxed faces, are the sinners of vanity. Endless rugged terrain shelters these sinners, where their feet are cut and split open by the sharp earth. As punishment for choosing to live their lives in vanity, these miserable souls are forced to look in a mirror at a twisted and grotesque version of themselves representing their horrible personalities. No longer able to see their “perfect” reflection, they attack mirrors and scratch their bodies. Individuals who use their vanity to demean individuals find their mirrors exploding in their faces and bodies. Since the urge for vanity is strong, they are forced to remove the pieces of their body and reassemble the ...... middle of paper ...... is covered with sweet grass welcoming evil souls into their new home. Unaware of the trap they have fallen into, pedophiles receive a punishment worthy of those who commit such viscous crimes. Here, 8-foot-tall demons roam and guard the land. They are monstrous in size, with every body part exaggerated to the extreme. Pedophiles are subjected to these extreme portions as they are held down on the ground and repeatedly raped until their anuses are torn to shreds and they bleed profusely. Others are bitten on their genitals by snakes crawling around the earth and when bitten, their genitals swell in immense pain, until they slowly tear. Their wickedness is taken away from them and the only thing left is a petrified soul wanting freedom from its torture. By taking away children's innocence and leaving them scarred, pedophiles from hell are deprived of humanity and dignity..
