A Short Treatise on Manga On the back cover of his groundbreaking book, Mastering Manga, artist Mark Crilley states: "There's more to manga than big, bright eyes and funky hair. » Yet many adults still consider manga to be “junk food” for the brain. While children and adolescents frequently play card games and video games based on manga, few enjoy them in their original form. Although most libraries carry a wide range of manga, many people in America are still woefully undereducated about the art form, which is a shame, because, as Eri Izawa writes on her website, " ...Japanese manga are of all types, for all kinds. [of] people. Unlike the United States, which generally seems to believe that "comics are for kids"... Japanese manga-ka [authors]... write for everyone... (there's even a category for ex-juvenile delinquent mothers!) » There is literally a manga for everyone, even though most adults, if exposed to it, have only seen manga such as Pokémon or Yu-Gi-Oh! which are intended for children. In reality, manga has many different genres, including action, drama, and historical fiction. If someone doesn't like the look of jagged hair and big, intense eyes, there are many alternative art styles. Many manga are educational – some would even say more educational than many textbooks – simply because they are very engaging. The authors incorporate detailed illustrations, interesting characters, and complex plots into an art form that everyone can benefit from. The manga is truly too good to miss! Since the manga is produced in or heavily influenced by Japan, it is filled with foreign terms that make some people hesitate. Actually, Japanese terms aren't too difficult to understand.
