  • Essay / What are the negative effects of a broken family

A study compared 137 divorced families and 165 married families. The study showed that siblings relied on each other during the difficult process of divorce and family separation. The older brother was there to protect and care for the younger ones. The “parent” role played by older siblings was not always appreciated by younger children since they were not the real parent. Siblings were still able to support each other and get along better while parents argued and managed their own conflicts (Sheehan, G., Darlington, Y., Noller, P., & Feeney, J. 2004) . One child in the study said her older sister was the only one who could understand what she was feeling and what she was going through at the time. In this study, the bonding and warmth that siblings showed each other was higher than in married families, but there was a higher rate of hostility among divorced siblings than in married families. This demonstrates a long-term effect because siblings have learned to rely on each other and overcome their differences from a young age (Sheehan, G., Darlington, Y., Noller, P. and Feeney , J. 2004). I can understand this because my younger brother and I are always together, whether we are at our mother's house or our father's house. We experienced the same things as each other, in a different way than our older sister, because she only stays with our mother. We are all here to support you, even if there are arguments between us. The divorce was a positive event for our family, for me and for my brother.
