  • Essay / 9/11: Why it could happen again - 1157

September 11, 2001, the day that changed America forever. That day, 3,000 Americans, including civilians, police officers, firefighters and paramedics, were innocently murdered by Al-Qaeda terrorists. Commercial planes were used as missiles and landed on the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in the nation's capital and in an open field in Pennsylvania. With America being the most technologically advanced country in the world and having the largest, strongest and most advanced military, it is difficult to understand how these horrific acts of terrorism could have occurred on American soil. After the World Trade Center bombings in 1993 and the Murrah Building bombing in Oklahoma City, you would think we would have learned the lessons from these intelligence failures and implemented them. would have improved. The cause of the failures of the intelligence services on September 11? Communication breakdowns? Or simply the inability to piece it all together? I believe that 9/11 could have been avoided if certain actions and policies had been followed and put in place. Many people believe that there was a lack of information collected across agencies and that the information they had was not shared among them. Along with this, people believe that no measures have been taken in ministries to further strengthen the fight against terrorism. None of these assumptions turned out to be true. In 1993, a truck bomb exploded in the garage of the World Trade Center, killing six people. This is the first major attack on American soil. The investigation led the FBI to Omar Abdel Raham and another group who planned to bomb the Lincoln and Holland tunnels, the United Nations and other sites (Reno). After the investigation it became clear that there was a connection between the...... middle of the newspaper...... there was traffic indicating that there would be an attack on September 11 (PBS). They didn't know the time, the place, or what type of attack it would be. This information was only translated and released on September 12, the day after the attacks. Our government and agencies were slow to respond and too comfortable. They spent too much time focusing on maritime terrorism, not realizing that they were planning attacks and using our resources in our own backyard. September 11 was a major wake-up call for everyone, citizens and the government. Agencies like the CIA and FBI need to let go of their egos and understand that we all need to work together and that we are all one team. The resources and tools available to agencies were simply too slow and relaxed. If they had not been, the terrorist attacks of September 11 could have been avoided..
