    In Beowulf's case, he first demonstrates his abilities and strength when he confronts Grendel. Hundreds of people had fought Beowulf with swords and other weapons and failed. However, Beowulf only wanted to fight with his fists stating that Grendel "is not wont to strike me, to break my shield, therefore I will bear no blade at night if he sees fit to fight unarmed" [607-610]. When he finally fought Beowulf, he was able to easily tear Grendel's hand off, the narrator noting that Beowulf's grip was "harder than any he had ever encountered in all Middle-earth" [671-672].
