    This is effective because of her use of descriptive words like "stark" and "tall, round and bright like jungle boys cartoons.” (Smith) These words add images in the reader's head and when you read "tall, round and shiny like cartoon jungle boys" (Smith) you get the image of two cartoon characters fighting in a cartoon puff of smoke where different parts of the body come out of the smoke during the fight then instantly return to the smoke. These words show that the main character thinks this is all a cartoon and the quote itself shows the reader that there are sick people in this world, now and in the past, who will do horrible things because a person's skin color is different. If she left these words aside and simply said that I walked into a dark alley, because it's hard to see me, and I beat a black man with a pipe, the meaning would not be the same. There is a demonic effect that is parental when you read the quote and its use of imagery makes the main character seem more evil. Additionally, the way she uses dialogue in her images impacts the reader's sense of listening. The part of the quote: “Hey, nigger, Abe Lincoln is long dead. » (Smith), really adds more hatred into the interaction. If this line were obvious, the entire quote would not be as strong because the dialogue gives the reader
