People all over the world suffer from this terrible illness, but you may be wondering what it is, what causes it, and if there is any treatment? All of these questions and more deserve to be answered, but first, what is schizophrenia? Schizophrenia is a mental disorder characterized by irrational thought processes. A person dealing with this debilitating illness may think people are going to kill or kidnap them. Some schizophrenics often have “voices” in their head that tell them what to do. In some cases, this has led people to commit or attempt suicide. Schizophrenia is everywhere you look. Out of one hundred thousand people, at least one hundred and fifty people suffer from schizophrenia. Like any other disorder, schizophrenia can be divided into different types. The three most common types of schizophrenia are: paranoid schizophrenia, disorganized schizophrenia, and negative schizophrenia. Paranoid schizophrenia is characterized by the feeling of being left out. Disorganized schizophrenia, on the other hand, is characterized by illogical thoughts but not delusions. Finally, catatonic schizophrenia occurs when reality is misinterpreted (psychosis). Although schizophrenia is a mental illness, there are still symptoms or things to look out for. Some of these symptoms include: a change in work performance, disordered thoughts, nonsense talk, hallucinations and delusions, unusual perceptions, and a change in social relationships. Schizophrenia is never described in exactly the same way when described by different people with the illness. However, what they describe is quite similar in one way or another.
