  • Essay / The Health Benefits of Exercise Programming - 1823

To investigate the contemporary body of knowledge underlying current recommendations for exercise programming with the goal of improving health.Pate et al. (1995) stated that physical activity is necessary for health promotion and disease prevention. They also said every adult should get at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise every day, if possible. Moderate-intensity exercise includes activities such as brisk walking and cycling, as outlined by the Ministry of Health (2011). They also claim that regular physical activity will improve a person's mental health, as it will increase self-esteem and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. Physical well-being is also improved by an increase in physical activity. The World Health Organization (WHO) (2002) found that in developed countries, 20% of heart diseases and 10% of strokes are due to physical inactivity. Additionally, lack of physical activity causes 3% of all diseases. Kerr (2012) states that there are 3 main types of exercise: aerobics, strength/resistance training, and flexibility exercises. Aerobic exercise will help keep the heart, lungs and muscles healthy and, combined with a healthy diet, will help with weight loss. Proper resistance training will help improve strength, posture, and balance while making the participant's body look more toned. Additionally, building muscle will help with weight loss because at rest, muscles burn more calories than inactive tissue. These exercises should be performed two or three times a week. Flexibility exercises are important because if a muscle is not stretched, it will shorten over time and become less elastic. As a result, joint mobility will decrease and the risk of muscle injuries...... middle of paper ......ll, B, Willett, W, Manson, J, Leitzmann, M, Stampfer, M, Hunter, D, & Colditz, G (2001), “Physical activity and mortality: a prospective study in women”, American Journal Of Public Health, 91, 4, pp. 578-583 The American College of Sports Medicine.
