Essay / Lies and Deceptions in The Great Gatsby - 707
“Me, I am dishonest, and you can always trust a dishonest man to be dishonest. Honestly, it's the honest people you have to be wary of. This quote from Johnny Depp is his most famous quote. Johnny is a well-respected Hollywood actor and has become wise over the years. This quote is full of truth and really thought-provoking. It's hard to trust people you know are dishonest to do something, but at least you know they're not trustworthy. Someone you think is trustworthy may be dishonest and you don't know it. So you trust them and they take advantage of your trust and betray you. This isn't always the case, but unfortunately it happens more often than you think. There are many themes in the book “The Great Gatsby”. I decided to choose the following theme for a few good reasons. Untrustworthy people can be all around you. I chose to do this theme because of the multiple cases in the book that prove it, like Jordan Baker cheating during one of his big golf tournaments, or when Tom Buchanan cheats on his wife Daisy. This document will show you several excerpts from the book that support the theme I showed previously. There are many instances throughout the book where someone is dishonest to others they know. This is definitely a motif throughout the pages of “The Great Gatsby.” The first example I will explain is that of Jordan Baker. Jordan is a professional golfer who participated in an important match for her golfing career. A semi-final match against other top competitors must have been very important for her. “At her first major golf tournament there was an argument that almost reached the newspapers, suggesting she had moved her ball after a bad lie in the semi-final.” She d...... middle of paper ...... backs off and gets involved with another person. There is no good enough reason for a person to cheat on their spouse, regardless of the circumstances. If they want to, they must end the relationship first. Or, they just have to try to make the relationship work as it is. As you can see from the many reasons above, there are many examples of people being dishonest and lying to others in the book. Proving that people you think you can trust can turn their backs on you and hurt you. Sometimes it's best to keep things to yourself, it's possible. Dishonesty and lying usually result in hurt and ultimately it's not worth it. Thank you for taking the time to read the document and I hope I have taught you something that you can apply to your life. Works Cited Fitzgerald, Scott. The Great Gatsby. New York: Scribner, 2004.
