Essay / Women are treated differently from men and have been...
The book Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck is set in China at a time when society was going through some modernization while remaining associated with its ancient traditions and customs. Wang Lung's father, a poor young farmer, contacts the Hwang family to ask if they have an unused slave to marry his son since he has reached marriageable age. The family agrees to sell him a twenty-year-old slave named O-lan who will then become his wife even though they hardly spoke or knew each other. Throughout the book we can see the unfair perspectives of women that are given to women. The first way that illustrates how women are looked down upon is how they are forced to do things they don't even want to do. For example, in the book, O-lan is sold to Wang Lung without being asked if she wants it or not. After this, she is placed in an arranged marriage with him. She didn't really have a say in whether or not she wanted to marry him. Today, one-day arranged marriages are no longer accepted as before. Although liberal marriage is more common today because the person is not obligated to marry someone they don't love or just met. In today's society we have more liberal marriage because we can choose who we want to marry and love. For many centuries, women have been treated as mere accessories and have been treated unfairly by men. In addition to being treated unfairly, they are also paid much lower wages than men when doing the same work. This unfair treatment of women has been happening for many years and can be seen in many areas of our society, such as education, family and work. For many centuries, women were treated as nothing more than an accessory and given... .. middle of paper ...... would have had her feet bound, she probably wouldn't have been able to help to work in the field. This shows that O-lan contributes to his family's financial success by helping Wang Lung. For many years, women have been viewed by men as accessories and not treated fairly. Even though women enjoy rights and freedoms, they are still not treated equally by men. Women are usually seen as doing household chores, but compared to the book, O-lan shows differently as she contributes to helping Wang Lung work in the fields. Women are looked down upon, but over time, we see how women can do as much as men. Works Cited Glynn, Sarah J. “Top 10 Facts About the Wage Gap.” Name. Np, and Web.
