  • Essay / Animal Liberation by Peter Singer - 1078

Animals may be man's best friend; however, they can also become your worst enemy after crossing certain limits. Peter Singer, who wrote Animal Liberation, gave valid arguments in my opinion, because animals have the right to live and we should give them their space. Humans take everything for granted and never seem to learn until it's too late. Today, slaughterhouses mistreat animals in worrying ways, which must change. I will agree with Singer's concepts about animals because they have the right to live peaceful lives like humans; they have a life ahead of them once born. Singer argues that animals' interests should be considered throughout their lives. Singer wants to eliminate speciesism from our thoughts, that is, a discriminatory human belief that all other animals are not as good as them, therefore they have no rights and we can make them what we want. We should not be the only types of “animals” on this earth that have a set of rights that we should respect. Singer believes animal rights should be considered. He tries to show how we should care about their interests, regardless of the type of animal. The only difference between humans and animals is that we are different species and we must respect each other because we both live. Singer explains how to tell if animals feel pain and basically says that we feel pain but react differently unless you're born without a pain receptor, which is dangerous. He later gives the example of a rat and a stone being struck along the road. If you hit a stone, nothing will happen because it is a stone and it has no feelings; However, kicking a rat is bad because it will suffer. This brings up a good point, like how we humans kill animals for fun middle of paper...... our way when we try to do something like deforestation. We must respect the living creatures in our world because they have a life that they should enjoy. People never want to see the dark side of an industry, which is why society doesn't seem to care or be informed. What this reminds me of personally is the Scooby Doo series which is about monsters and teenagers investigating them, trying to figure out what they are and at the end of each series it's always a human which gives a powerful message because ultimately humans are the monsters, are we the monsters today? We must open our eyes before it is too late. Life is precious and we should cherish every moment. QuotesSinger, Peter. Animal liberation. New York: Singer, 1990.
