  • Essay / Analysis of the film “The Crucible” - 1470

For this assignment, I chose three films about witches because it was the subject that I found the most interesting in this course. The first film was Black Sunday (Mask of Satan), directed by Mario Bava, the second was Warlock, directed by Steve Miner, and the last was The Crucible, directed by Nicholas Hytner, based on the play by Arthur Miller. Witchcraft was once and still can be a very controversial topic, as it challenges the religions and beliefs of others and is contrary to Christianity. Each film was based on the witch and set in the 17th century. The beliefs were mostly similar but differed from each other due to the locations where they occurred. In Black Sunday, also known as The Mask of Satan, the story takes place in Moldova, a country in Europe. A witch, Asa, and her partner Javutich are sentenced to be burned alive for witchcraft by her brother, but just before she dies, Asa curses her brother saying that she will come back to haunt all her descendants. This shows the belief that women had evil power over men. The first religious symbol of the film then appears; it is the mask representing the face of Satan. This mask was nailed to the witch's face because it was believed to be her real face. The mask also ended the "envy" that women created because they couldn't see their eyes. Nearly two centuries later, a doctor and his assistant are on their way to a medical conference and their car breaks down near the crypt where the witch is located. buried. They decide to be curious and discover the witch's tomb which has a window above the face, another religious symbol. The glass had a cross engraved so that the witch was still facing it, unable to resurrect herself. While hitting a bat, Dr. Kruvajan accident...... middle of paper...... the safer one was, the safer they were. People who were poor or already struggling were usually the ones found guilty of witchcraft. One of the symbols of witchcraft was the mushroom. Mary Warren's doll was believed to be a sort of voodoo doll as the needle is believed to have been used to stab Abagail as it appears with blood from the same location. The movie was just extremely strange because it showed that the only way to stop being a witch was to admit that you were one. Each of these films had the same common theme of witchcraft, but they had different symbols to represent them. . The reason behind all these movies and witches in general has always been Satan. It was believed that they were there to carry out the tasks that Satan had ordered them to perform. The films showed the religious symbols and themes that history has used to categorize witchcraft..
