  • Essay / Getting Into Character - 756

Our first study subject, Stella Adler, was one of Stanislavskiz's students and was the only American actress to study with him. While I don't identify with all of Stella Adler's techniques as a whole as they don't seem to take as in-depth an approach as some of the other acting methods, some of her techniques such as "playing is doing" I found it very useful. When Adler says that to act is to do, she is referring to the fact that every actor must have a purpose for an action. I found it was important for me to remember this, because often I found myself in my scenes doing way more than I needed to. I always had to remember what Meisner said: “Less is more!” » Additionally, Stella Adler's approach of training the imagination so that you can see in its entirety the imaginary scene around you on stage has been important in stage work. Often in the past when I performed it was easy because I was surrounded by a well-designed and realistic set, but when I performed in a black box theater, or in our case essentially a gym, it It is necessary to train your mind to put yourself in a specific time and place, even if the audience cannot see it. Studying Sanford Meisner was great for me because it had been a long time since I had done many of his theater exercises. When I embark on a scene with a partner, there is nothing better for me than to resort to rehearsal. The rehearsal was not only great for breaking the ice between your play partner, but also for trying to uncover the truth in the words between you and your rehearsal partner. Often during class I would feel frustrated because my partner wasn't pushing me as far as I would push him. Although it is important to be respectful when acting, I believe that to ...... middle of paper ...... ask a homeless person, it would not be a bad practice to go out on the street dressed as a homeless person before filming in order to get “in character”. In my rehearsals this year, the rehearsal taught by Meisner helped me find honesty in the lines. Repetition also helped me try to get honesty from my partners. Getting all the actors on the same page was difficult this semester in that the energy and overall purpose of the scenes we were doing had to be the same for all the actors for the scene to make sense. Taking a scene out of context is difficult, and it is important to realize how scenes become less powerful when they no longer relate to the rest of the play and it is the responsibility of the actors to provide the audience with tangible explanations about what happened. I believe it is the actors' task to portray the truth even if they themselves are a lie..
