  • Essay / Mental Health Association Case Study - 814

Watson and B.F. Skinner were the leading psychologists credited with first studying operant conditioning. Operant conditioning focuses on the theory of behaviorism. People behave the way they do because of a stimulus and the reinforcement of that stimulus. There are negative and positive reinforcements (Gluck, Mercado & Myers, 2008). MHA rules are reinforced primarily through negative reinforcement. When members do not follow the rules; such as exceeding their shower time, counselors can remove that member's shower privileges for a predetermined amount of time. If a member misbehaves and causes a scene or becomes threatening, counselors can expel the member from the center; either for a certain number of days or permanently. There are strengths and weaknesses to using operant conditioning in MHA. One of the strengths of this method is that most MHA members are willing to obey the rules so that they can continue to visit the center and have access to their resources and amenities. The problem with using this method is that when a member is evicted, it removes any chance of them being mentally stable, finding employment, and getting their own housing. Social learning theory has also been observed at MHA. Just like with children, adults at the center use observation and imitation to learn good gestures.
