Have you ever experienced such a conversation when you did not understand what was specifically being discussed? How about finding yourself caught in an argument or discussion that is completely lost and frustrated and yet played out as if everything is going well? Ernest Hemingway's short story "Hills Like White Elephants" illustrates the relationship of a couple who cannot communicate effectively with each other. Hemingway incorporates the use of character to develop the theme of communication. Readers are first introduced with a couple conversing in a public space during a crisis point in their relationship. The author's pragmatic approach to the characters' point of view was a technique that allowed the tension between the couple to recede from the story. Such a technique reflects the difficulty of interaction and understanding between the two characters. Hemingway's goal was to keep his readers guessing through a thorough interpretation of the text. We, the readers, are left to understand why and what we are trying to say throughout this frustrating and volatile discussion. The distance and lack of successful communication between a couple waiting to board a train to Madrid are very similar to two parallel things. railway tracks that will never come into contact. The story begins with an introduction of the characters and the limited information we receive about them as the author describes them as "The American and the Girl" (120). Hemingway does a remarkable job of creating a vague setting as well as a lifeless atmosphere throughout the story. Therefore, Hemingway's goal is for the audience to feel the isolation between the couple to the extent that even the audience feels... middle of paper ...... Such an exchange is the normal and appropriate way to let your partner really know how you feel. Therefore, I believe that the art of this particular work of fiction teaches us to always be truly happy with ourselves to the extent that we can happily make our own decisions. Additionally, confidence is vital to overcoming the power of suggestion in life. It can be beneficial to always be open to suggestions, but as soon as sincere advice turns into a suggestion based on self-interest, such as what we witness in "Hills Like White Elephants", the goal of the audience is defeated. A rule of life that I always like to live by and hope Jig can learn from is the expression that we are the ones who are in complete control of our destiny..
