This can lead to serious intestinal problems, abdominal pain and malnutrition. Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis can also be painful and debilitating. Medications can eliminate symptoms and prevent flare-ups. Surgery may be necessary in some cases to repair the colon. Diverticulitis The disease occurs when pockets in the large intestine become infected and inflamed.
