    A man named Dr. James Naismith created the game of basketball in 1891. Naismith created basketball as a mission from Dr. Gulick, director of a YMCA in Springfield in Massachusetts, as an indoor game that used intelligence rather than skill. The first match took place on January 20, 1892 and included "eighteen players, 13 rules, two peach baskets and a final score of 1-0", as Naismith later stated. Naismith also stated that "the game was a success from the moment the first ball was thrown" (f), but he did not know how big the game would be. The equipment and rules created by Naismith were usually the same, although due to the times they were never exactly the same, especially for women. A physical education teacher named Senda Berenson thought basketball was "unfeminine" and adapted the rules to make it appropriate for women in 1892 (a). Berenson was from nearby Smith College and she was the first to change the rules to allow women to play.
