The Persistence of Racism and Stereotyping in Our Modern Society Racism, as a dictionary term, is the belief that a person or group of people is thin because of their ethnic origin (Webster, n.d.). However, the term “RACSISM” can be applied to many different topics that are the subject of prejudicial debate. If you think about it, the definition of racism can mean more than just hatred towards a specific race or races. The word could imply discrimination based on religion, gender or sexual orientation. And from this conception develops a fixed but illiterate belief about the behavior of certain factions. These established interpretations are known as stereotypes and are used to define a wide range of topics. Religion, gender, race and sexualitySayments like "all Muslims are terrorists", "all African-Americans like fried chicken", "all women belong in the kitchen" or "all gay men act like girls,” are just a few. Rude and insensitive statements defined as stereotypes. However, the topic of discussion does not involve abandoning false beliefs about sexuality or religion, nor does it focus on gender discrimination. Rather, the topic discussed deals with the modern issue of racism and stereotypes regarding ethnicity. Many assume that this explanation of racism relates only to past conflict between African Americans and Caucasians. But contrary to this common judgment, racism does not only occur between these two ethnic groups. Discrimination can develop among any group of people. Society sees it happening every day; from small, undiversified towns to large, cultured cities. Yet so many people remain stuck in the idea that this situation constitutes a muted dilemma. Some people simply ignore the problem, mainly because it does not concern them or their loved ones.
