Essay / The importance of living in a multicultural society
A good example of stereotypes that often come to mind about African Americans is that they are always more muscular and better at sports. They are considered much more talented than the other race, and are expected to perform extraordinarily in a match. As Michael Omni explains in his article In Living Color: Race and American Culture: “Why aren't black men or black people good swimmers? Because they have no buoyancy... They have great musculature and various other things. They are light-footed. And that's why there are a lot of black players in the major leagues. As to whether I have the experience to become club president or bank president, I don't know” (626). This is all because popular culture has made racism and stereotyping an intuitive part of American culture. Omi suggests that people are carried away by the media and that Americans are unknowingly programmed to view the white community, regardless of race, as some kind of stereotype, whether Latino, Asian, Hispanic or Hispanic..
