  • Essay / Cellular functions - 955

P1: Describe the functions of the main cellular compounds. What is a cell? Cells are the basic building blocks of all living things. The human body is made up of millions and billions of these small cells. These tiny little cells that don't seem to be able to do much play an important role in our body. It's what helps provide good structure to our bodies, helps convert nutrients from the foods we eat into energy, and all have their own individual functions. There are many types of cells, such as human body cells, animal cells, and plant cells, each with its own role. In this essay, I will evaluate the components of an animal cell and evaluate each component in more detail to get a detailed understanding of it all. The animal cell contains the following components.Animal CellNucleusThe nucleus is the largest structure of a cell; however, some cells may have more than one nucleus, such as red blood cells, while cells such as bacterial cells do not have a nucleus. The nucleus, which is one of the most important parts of a cell, is found in the middle of the cell containing the DNA; DNA is like the control room of each cell, giving orders to the cell; telling the cell to grow, die, etc. The nucleus is then covered by a nuclear envelope; this envelope protects the DNA that is inside the nucleus, the nucleus envelope also disconnects the nucleus from the rest of the cell. The nucleus of the animal cell also controls the animal's cell growth, reproduction, and metabolism. VacuoleVacuoles are sac-shaped substances found in cells, they are found in both plant and animal cells, but primarily in plant cells. These bags are food reservoirs for the cell, not only do they store food but sometimes retain the waste produced...... middle of paper ...... the uterus once delivery has taken place. However, uncontrolled release of lysosome contents into the cytoplasm can also cause cell death; also known as necrosis.Cell MembraneThe cell membrane is likened to the door of a house; it is there to keep everything in the cell safe and protected from any unwanted substances such as bacteria. There are also holes that allow fluid and pieces of cells to enter and prevent anything unwanted from entering. The holes are there to allow certain things to enter. and out of the cell. CytoplasmThe cytoplasm is a substance that fills the interior space of the cell. The cytoplasm holds a firm structure for the internal cell; it contains protein filaments called the cytoskeleton that also help maintain the shape and consistency of the cell. In addition to nutrient storage, cellular reactions take place in the cytoplasm, such as protein synthesis...
