Since many of the major religions were formed thousands of years ago, some people have difficulty believing their teachings. For some, a more modern religion born of this century is more credible and more important in their eyes. Many new religions take a scientific approach to their beliefs, which is absent from older religions (Van Voorst 337). Having the ability to address modern concerns in new ways attracts a whole new audience, many of whom are not interested in traditional churches (Van Voorst 337). New religious movements are also often technologically advanced. For example, the Church of Scientology is well known for having one of the nicest websites of any church (Van Voorst 336). Studies show that religion can have many positive impacts on someone's life. Religion gives people things like meaning, purpose, and hope (Raman). New religious movements help brighten the lives of people who still want the benefits of religion, but are unable to believe in older religions. It also helps bring communities together and create support groups that help those in need. New religions offer an escape for people who feel the need to belong to something in their lives. By practicing religion and following its rituals, we can help them find calm and stability.
