  • Essay / The Confederate Flag: Confederate Symbols...

It signifies pride and heritage in exactly the same way as any state flag or national flag such as the United States flag. Just because white supremacist groups like the Klan have tainted this flag with acts of hatred and racism does not mean its history fits within those boundaries. Many groups have wanted to preserve this flag in a positive way, such as the Sons of Confederate Veterans. This is a group that fights to preserve the pride and heritage of the Southern nation. Many of these men are men of color who are taking this sacred piece of tainted history and desperately trying to piece it together. It is therefore completely absurd to openly attack this flag with its single dark segment of history and completely neglect the positive aspects of the South. The Confederate battle flag should remain exactly where it is so that open-minded people can cherish it and feel free to express their heritage at any time.
