Often we wonder what makes someone a hero. We sometimes think of comic book heroes who perform miraculous feats, or even ordinary people like firefighters, soldiers, or searchers and rescuers. Our concept of a hero originated from the Greek philosopher Aristotle who said: “A tragic hero may be known as a great or virtuous character in a dramatic tragedy who is destined for downfall, suffering, or defeat” (Tragic Hero ). To be a tragic hero, one must go through so many obstacles and death sentences and never lose faith or be a coward. We might also have a prophecy to fulfill. These four men are considered tragic heroes; Achilles, Hector, Beowulf and Mr. Hamlet. A trait we see in heroes; they were born of nobility. The Greeks know Achilles as a demigod. Legend has it that his mother dipped him in the Styx. The Greeks have always admired Achilles. Then Agamemnon arrived, starting the Trojan War. After much Greek suffering, Agamemnon accepted Calchas the Seer's recommendation, but only on the condition that he take possession of Achilles' war prize - Briseis - as a replacement. Achilles then decided that when Agamemnon needed him most, he still would not be there. That being said, he remained on the sidelines until the battle came to his ship. Everyone loved him so much that they tried to convince him to join them in the war against the Trojans, but he refused. Having prophesied that he would kill Hector, Achilles finally entered the battle. Achilles also killed Hector in revenge for the murder of Patroclus (Agamemnon). As for Hector, he became the leader of the Trojan army. Hector depicted as an ideal warrior and the pillar of Troy. He had drawn in the most favorable colors as a good son, a loving husband and father, and a faithful friend. His farewells and his departure to meet Achilles one last time are moving. He became a particular favorite of the god Apollo (Hector). As for Beowulf, he became beloved by many in his native Scandinavia, Denmark. Beowulf would be the only warrior to fight for his homeland and its people. Other warriors accompanied him on his travels, but never helped him. When Beowulf only needed one help. Facing supernatural enemies and receiving supernatural aid, Achilles received help from his mother, the goddess of water. Achilles' mother dipped him in the River Styx when he was a child, making him a demigod. His mother managed to cover his entire body, except for the heel of his foot. This became the only way to kill Achilles. Achilles would like other gods to come to him in the battle against Troy. They would give him advice or it would just be his mother repeating the prophecy made about him. Achilles died because Apollo, the god of archery, helped Paris shoot an arrow into Achilles' weak spot, the heel of his foot. This killed Achilles (Supernatural). As for Hector, he received help from Ares, the god of war. When all the gods and goddesses came to fight to help their favorites, Hector and Ares fought side by side. Since Diomedes was the only one who could see the gods and goddesses, he knew when they were on the battlefield. He had seen Ares helping Hector. Then, after that day, Hector returned to where his wife and son were and told them to pray to the gods, because they might never see him again. The prophecy said that Achilles was going to kill him.
