Essay / Beauty in The Picture of Dorian Gray - 797
In Oscar Wilde's novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, beauty is depicted as the driving force in the lives of the three main characters, Dorian, Basil and Lord Henry. Dorian, the main character, believes in seizing the opportunity. Basile, the artist, admires everything that is beautiful in life. Lord Henry attributed physical appearance to the ability to achieve achievements in life. Beauty decides the fate of Dorian, Basil and Lord Henry. The novel embodies the relationship between beauty and morality. Beauty is not based on how attractive an object is to everyone, but how attractive it is to someone. Dorian Gray's life is dictated by his physical attractiveness. Her beauty lies in her youth. Dorian's perception of beauty allows him to love. He is convinced that his beauty allows him to accomplish whatever he desires, regardless of the consequences, while being loved by his friends. He uses his beauty to mitigate his evil deeds. Dorian says: “I wish to know nothing about them. I like scandals about others, but scandals about myself don't interest me. They don't have the charm of novelty. Youth and beauty are the most precious things to Dorian. In one's life, beauty is of utmost importance. Then he sees the image of himself, painted by Basil, absorbing his sins and it changes his outlook. “I hope it’s not about me.” I'm tired of myself tonight. I wish I was someone else,” Dorian said. He longed for a good life rather than one filled with artificial meaning and beauty. Doran's moral beauty lies in the portrait of himself. The portrait imitated his life. He finally realized that beauty could not help him escape his evil deeds. He deeply regretted his wish that the portrait carry the burden of his age and his ability to achieve anything in life. Hopefully, readers will learn from this novel that beauty is not the most important aspect of life. Today's society places emphasis on the beauty of the exterior facade. A person's outward appearance is the first thing we notice. People should look for the inner beauty of a person and love them for their inner beauty. Beauty, a powerful aspect of life, can attract attention but at the same time hide things that one does not want to reveal. Beauty can be used in a variety of ways to affect a person's status in culture, politics, and society. Beauty should certainly not be used to excuse punishment for bad deeds. Beauty is associated with good, but this is not always the case. This story describes how a person's outward attractiveness can influence their behavior and corrupt their inner beauty..
