  • Essay / Cognitive Psychology: Definition and My Understanding

Psychology is the study that primarily focuses on the mind and behavior. In this area, there are five main types of perspectives. These perspectives answer life's fundamental questions about how we think, feel, and act the way we do. The one that interests me the most is the cognitive perspective. By definition, it is a scientific study of the mind as a processor of information with respect to mental functions such as language use, perception, attention, use of long-term and short-term memory, problem solving and the way we think. Like a computer, the mind can process information, store data, and produce the necessary results, all guided by a predisposed set of instructions. According to Mcleod (2013), this has led cognitive psychologists to explain that memory consists of three stages: encoding (where information is received and processed), storage (where information is retained), and retrieval (where information is are recalled)". Essentially, it is important to examine the mental processes of an organism to fully understand how they can affect behavior. The father of this amazing branch of psychology is said to be Ulric Neisser. Say no to plagiarism . Get a custom essay on “Why violent video games should not be banned”? Neurons and the vast neural networks that make up our central nervous system detect receptor stimuli, interpret them, and send electrochemical messages to our extremities. Some of these actions are guided by memory, which is the mind's ability to learn previous responses to stimuli; for example, when someone hits us on the side of our rib, our response is to tense up and if this action is performed continuously over a long period of time, our mind already knows from memory that when that person raises his finger, we must contract. . This phenomenon can be described as classical conditioning. In a way, the cognitive perspective can go hand in hand with behaviorism. The cognitive perspective would be helpful in my career choice, which is in business. This field of study requires me to memorize a large number of concepts and methods to effectively accomplish my work. By increasing my cognitive skills in this area, I will be able to improve my memory of these concepts and methods, and increase my problem-solving skills in analyzing data for the task I will be required to perform. For example, dealing with a lot of numbers would require me to be focused and have an excellent memory. Most of the skills needed in this specific area would be learned throughout my studies, where they would be stored as memory for recall when I needed them. As mentioned earlier, the mind can operate based on memory and as “Tolman suggested that learning was based on the relationships that form between stimuli” (McLeod, 2015). By describing my cognitive skills, I will not only be able to perform well, but I will also gain recognition for my work ethic as well as the personal growth and satisfaction of knowing that I have achieved my goals. The cognitive perspective could generally improve my life by helping me with my memory skills. According to Karen Cherry (2019), psychologists have discovered that even though our short-term memory
